Another Mission: Impossible movie has recently come and gone, and I have found myself lost once again in the magic of that hokey 60’s spy show. The adventures of the original Impossible Mission Force have been a delight to me for years. The tension of a disguise almost uncovered, the absurdity of the gadgets and techniques rolled out with every episode, and the satisfaction of seeing a miraculous and crazy plan work out in the end all build up to make a really goofy, but thoroughly enjoyable experience, although it is definitely not for everyone.
Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful. And since we’ve no place to go, let’s watch the hands down greatest Christmas movie of all time, Die Hard! Yes, it’s an action movie, and no, it doesn’t talk about the true meaning of Christmas, but it is about getting together with your loved ones and the importance of family, be it how much you love your wife, whose being held hostage by a murderer, or the bond between a terrorist and his brother whose neck you broke. It’s set on Christmas eve, festive decorations and trees abound, and it ends with Vaughn Monroe singing Let It Snow. That’s good enough for me to pop this classic on every December.
Do your ever have those moments where you see something and it doesn’t leave much of an impact, but then years after you’ve forgotten about it, you see it again and it hits a dormant memory? This was the case for me with a particular NES game.
When I was a small child we would visit my grandmother and at her home was my uncle’s collection of NES games. Even though I was terrible at playing them, I still loved trying them out. Now, at the time I could barely read, and more often than not my brother would be the one actually playing through the games, but they still left impressions on me through the covers, the manuals, or the games themselves.
Although there were the classics, there were some games that were just to complex for a little kid to understand. One such game had a grey label depicting a man in a suit with a machine gun. I found the game hard to follow and I had no idea what I was supposed to do. All I could get from it was that you were exploring a city and there was a lot of reading involved.
Every time Nintendo releases a new system I await the time when they bring out their old guard for new games. So far, the Switch has delivered on the much-anticipated new Zelda, and announced the new Mario. However, the franchise I am the most anxious to hear from every time is Metroid; a series of superb quality, which has often gone underutilized by Nintendo.
Game consoles have had accessories in the past to enhance the experience of playing. Racing games have had special controllers designed like a car’s dashboard, such as the Arcade Racer Joystick for the Sega Saturn and the Hurricane Steering Wheel for PlayStation 3, space shooters and aerial dogfight games had joysticks made to feel more authentic, like the NES Quick Shot and the Saturn Mission Stick. To me, probably the most effective accessory is the light gun. It’s one of the oldest little toys, going back to the first game systems and even earlier.
Almost every film version of Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula has deemed it necessary to change major elements of the plot. The original Universal film changed names, character motives, and omitted major events. The Hammer film Horror of Dracula remained closer to the book, but still changed major plot points and names. Some more recent pictures have deliberately set out to change things in order to keep the story fresh, such as Dracula 2000, in which the Count is really Judas Iscariot, cursed by god to live forever, or Dracula Untold, wherein Dracula is really Vlad Tepes, a Romanian nobleman who willingly took on the vampire curse to save his people.
Now that Kojima has left Konami, it is a time to fear for his flagship series, Metal Gear. Konami, showing a distinct lack of foresight, have announced a Metal Gear Solid 3 themed pachinko machine and a 4-player co-op zombie game called Metal Gear Survive. These ideas do not make me confident the series is in good hands. This made me think back to any other Metal Gear games that were handled without Kojima’s involvement. There was Metal Gear: Ghost Bable (2000) for the Gameboy color, however that game was still made by people who had worked with Kojima on previous games, and he did give his approval to the project. There were the turn based Metal Gear AC!D (2005) games, but those were produced by Kojima himself.
